More Timely Music

July 20,2026

While I enjoy my radio Bible study, the pastor and I don’t always agree. So I was tickled the other morning, when he’d been annoying me, to switch to music after the broadcast and immediately hear John Denver’s song “Late Night Radio”, with my favorite line,

“The Lord is still my Shepherd, but that preacher’s gotta go.”

Good Sports

Cardboard boat races—I love ’em.

You get to watch people who have constructed boats out of cardboard and duct tape—and who have decorated them beautifully—paddle across a swimming pool, and see whose boat holds up and who wins.

Truthfully, I go as much for the decorations as the action, but they’re always fun to watch.

The last time, it was a little different. In the last race, one boat fell apart before they even got started—it had to be fished out of the pool in pieces. So one little guy had the field all to himself. But they let him get in his boat and paddle his little heart out to get to the other side, and the crowd cheered him on.

That is the definition of being sporting.

The World's Biggest Non-Problem

July 5, 2026

I continue to get mind-boggled by the number of tips there are for cleaning crusted-on food in the microwave.

How does that even happen?

For civilized people, these are the only tips you need to know:

Anyone who uses the microwave should cover the food. There are actually plastic, microwave-safe covers sold at grocery stores or in the home-goods section at other stores, made just for this purpose. Use them. (Tip: Store the cover IN the microwave so that anybody who uses the microwave will have to handle the cover, and can't say that they forgot it.)

When the food is finished heating, you or whoever takes it out should clean up anything that spilled. If you’re in the middle of a dinner party, and you don’t want to clean the spill RIGHT THEN, wipe out the microwave when you wipe down the stove (as I assume that you do) when you’re doing the dishes.

Seriously.

They Can't Keep Up with Themselves

June 17, 2026

After some sort of update, my TV started defaulting to the TV brand’s station instead of our cable. I eventually got aggravated enough to look online to see how to fix it.

The first few posts I read didn’t deal with my model, so the instructions worked up to a point, but not to the crucial part of the menu, which was where the fix lay.

I eventually got motivated enough to look for my model, and was delighted when I found a question about that very model on the website.

Reading the answers was the funniest thing. The company rep kept giving the instructions I’d already read, and the person who asked would follow along, but kept ending up saying, “That doesn’t work on my model.” The helpful Answer Person would say, “Oh, yes, we’ve upgraded on that model. Try this.” Same results.

I think they finally solved it, but after I got to a certain point and almost deleted the cable app, I decided to wait until someone more technologically advanced comes to the house. I’m hoping it’s not the helpful Answer Person.

A visitor did come, and fixed the issue in less than a minute. Maybe the company should hire him as their answer person.
