So Much Culture, So Little Effort

March 26, 2023

I was listening to the radio on the way to run errands yesterday, and the classical station was playing opera. When I pulled into a parking lot, a really beautiful aria was playing, so I stayed in the car to listen.

As I was waiting, I saw people coming out of the adjacent thrift store with their purchases, so I went in to take a gander. Saw a BEAUTIFUL set of china—it was the same as looking at a work of art.

So, I got quite a bit of culture, just running errands.

Today, I went to run more errands, and decided to go farther and take in an art exhibit being shown at a local community center. I wasn’t expecting much, but I REALLY enjoyed it.

And finally—I stopped at a bakery that’s never been open any time I’ve tried to go before. I checked out their cakes, which were also works of art. Then I bought a beautifully-decorated cookie, and ate some art.

All in all, not a bad weekend for culture.

It's Not In the Constitution

March 6, 2023

Missouri Sen. Rick Brattin would like the state to remove all taxes on firearms because "Taxation is a hindrance to the ability of people to exercise" the constitutional right to bear arms.

Brattin appears to be unconcerned with sales taxes on food.

So, in his view, eating is not a constitutional right?

Responsible Legislators Not Welcome

March 5, 2023

Tony Gonzalez, R-Texas, was censured by his party for bucking the party line.

One of his transgressions? Voting for new gun safety laws after the Uvalde school shooting, which was in his district.

"Not Dead Yet" Not Too Bad

March 5, 2023

Whoever was in charge of the promos for ABC’s “Not Dead Yet” didn’t do the show any favors. The show looked so annoying that I didn’t even bother to record it, as I often do with new shows, to give them a try.

But it’s the weekend, and I had time to kill, and I like Gina Rodriguez, who plays the lead character, so I looked it up. The first half of the first episode really is annoying; but then it picks up.

The “life lessons” are pretty trite, but they’re good reminders; and I like some of the characters, so I’ll keep at it for a while. (And by that, I mean that I watched three episodes in my first sitting.)
