There’s a guy who was horrible to his kids the whole time they were growing up. The unhappier he made them, the happier he was.
Now he’s old, and needs a lot of help. They would have been perfectly justified in turning their backs on him, but they spend a lot of time and energy making sure he’s cared for and has a social life.
And they don’t do it because they have to. They’re not intimidated by him anymore; he’s not holding some big inheritance over their heads. They do it simply because they’re good people. And I find it amazing.
These are some of the things I think about:
- It’s a shame he’ll never know how lucky he is.

This is
what forgiveness looks like.

And I hope
it empowers them, and gives back something that he took from them; because they’re making the choice to be good to him—and that’s power.
I admire them more than I can say.
