I was telling somebody my thoughts on St. Louis cleaning up and beautifying itself it before officials started more projects (complete with tax abatement) for trying to lure people back to the city.
He said that he lives in West Philadelphia, and that some citizens had an unofficial beautification committee of their own, in which they knocked down old houses and put in community gardens and greenspace.
I said that getting permits, declaring buildings derelict, and doing the demolition took time.
He responded, “It’s pretty amazing what you can do with a sledgehammer at night. Those old buildings come right down.”
Works for me.
