The Spelling Hasn't Changed, So I Have To

July 25, 2026

I get really annoyed when I see “all right” spelled “alright” in books. I’ve always thought that it was a modern spelling used by people who just didn’t know any better (and who had lousy proofreaders).

But I was watching a silent movie from 1917 today, and there, in black and white, was the word “alright”.  I was stunned.

Upon further research (one online article) I learned that the word dates even farther back: Mark Twain used it in “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865.

So, I will sigh, and try to adapt to olden times.
