Who Needs the Fifth Column when You've Got a Phone?

June 29, 2025

My paper may have given my personal information to Facebook, but my phone uses pictures I take to try to sell me things.

I took a picture of a home improvement project yesterday, and my phone immediately gave me website of businesses in the area that could help.

That’s not at all creepy…

(For those readers who are not older than dirt, the Fifth Column is a reference to people in a country who are allied with the country’s enemies, typically associated with spying or sabotage.)

It Could Have Been Tricky

The publisher of our newspaper had a class-action lawsuit filed against it for disclosing subscribers’ personal information to Facebook (publisher denies wrongdoing), and we may be eligible for part of the settlement.

As I am a firm believer in supporting the press, and the publisher is fighting off a takeover, I hate to cause them any more financial stress; but they shouldn’t have given people’s personal information without their permission, so if they did, I think that they should be soundly smacked.

A moral dilemma—will I or won’t I join the lawsuit?

Moral dilemma solved by learning that we would only get a small amount; and we’d probably have to give the same personal information to the law people.
