Two of my friends were discussing, via text, the death of Nichelle Nichols, who played Lt. Uhura in the original “Star Trek” series. They talked about the effect she’d had on their lives, giving them a role model as Black girls in the 1960’s. And not just a Black role model, but a role model for nerdy girls.
“All of us little nerdy girls who were obsessed. She didn’t even know the impact she was having on us. When you saw Uhura, you could believe it for yourself. I can say that the confidence modeled was something I will attribute to ‘Star Trek’ and to her. Legacy unmatched.”
RIP, Ms. Nichols.
