As Long as We're Profiling...

February 11, 2023

A friend of mine has taught at a private school for over 2 decades; she’s Black, the majority of the students are White.

The other day she was about 50 feet from her classroom with her lanyard, keys, and photo ID visible, and was stopped by security because “she looked like she might be lost.” It was a clear case of racial profiling.

She was pretty philosophical about it, saying it was pretty minor compared to a lot of other incidents, and that there were lots of new people who might not know her. Ironically, she’s leading workshops next Friday on Interrupting Bias. And yes, the security guards have to attend.

She said this was an excellent teaching example. Lord love her!

My question is: Why aren’t security guards required to have a psychological assessment and profile before they’re hired? We’ve seen enough news stories of overzealous school security officers to know that it’s not a bad idea. And why not root out people who will be biased against other people who are a different color?

People hiring security personnel should put profiling to good use.
