Consumer, Protect Thyself

September 6, 2023

I read in the paper today that people are trying to get laws passed to prohibit businesses or individuals from grabbing up scads of concert tickets when they go on sale and then selling them at inflated prices. According to the article, some people paid up to 70 times the face value of tickets for a Taylor Swift concert. “Protect the consumer!” is the cry.

It seems to me that consumers could protect themselves by not buying a ticket at 70 times its face value.

If people traded carpe diem for caveat emptor, the scalpers wouldn’t have a market. Granted, I don’t have a leg to stand on here: I don’t crave the live concert experience enough to shell out ridiculous amounts of money for it; but if you feel strongly enough about a show to pay that kind of money, then you don’t really need protecting, do you? It’s your choice.

The people I feel sorry for are the ones who get shut out because they’re just nice people with average (or teenager) incomes who want to see somebody in concert, and they can’t—because other people shell out the big bucks to the scalpers.

So, help out your fellow citizens: Stop feeding the scalpers.
