Are you ready for this? Airlines don’t want to post all their miscellaneous fees up front, because they’re afraid that will confuse consumers.
The industry whose base fares vary depending on season, day, time of day, class of travel/comfort level, and return date are afraid that listing straight fees would confuse people.* It’s possible—people might spend hours clicking around to find the catch.
In order to help the CEOs of multibillion-dollar companies figure it out (don’t they have People for that?), I made a little chart.
Base Fare—consult website for varying fares bases on numerous criteria.
Legroom |
$50 |
Checked Baggage |
$25 |
Carry-on Baggage |
$10 |
Choosing seat in advance |
$15 |
Aisle Seat (I may be making this one up) |
$10 |
Window Seat (I may be making this one up) |
$12 |
Middle Seat (I may be making this one up) |
$11 |
Seat with oxygen mask (OK, I’m making that one up) |
$50 |
I begin to see what they’re afraid of. If they charge you for choosing a seat, then charge again based on the position of the seat, you might notice that, if it’s all laid out.
Maybe they’re not as dumb as I thought.
