I Want Kathy Bates to Play Me

November 10, 2024

Sometimes I'll wander into a high-end store to look at their overpriced crap and see what the fuss is about. Even though I'm respectably dressed (but not dressed like I typically buy something there, I'll admit), I get followed by security.

I have friends who dress better, but are Black, so they get followed in stores, too. So I've come up with the ideal heist film:

Security focuses on the Black woman with impeccable credentials, while her blonde accomplice, who is wandering around unmolested, is robbing the place blind. The gang alternates with using the plainly-dressed woman, whom security will follow, while a better-dressed woman pulls the heist.

If I can't get a cameo in the movie, I want Kathy Bates to play me.

Who's Doing the Research?

November 10, 2024

The mayor of St. Louis and her son were among the people receiving that hateful text about slave masters being ready to pick them up and take them to the cotton fields.

The text is breathtaking in its cruelty. My initial reaction was disgust, followed by a strong desire to find a bunch of people and slap them silly. I’d like to think it’s “foreign bad actors”, but I’m not so sure, which is terribly sad.

My later reaction was to wonder what data the senders are mining in order to know whom to send the texts to. When we enter information “For Research Purposes Only”, is that the source of the information they’re using?

If it is for research, the research is probably going to take a hit soon. I’ll bet that many people will hit “Prefer not to say” on the Ethnicity question from now on.

They ARE Taking the Long View!

November 8, 2024

Walmart took exception to a guy ripping them off by stealing goods and then returning them with receipts he’d printed himself,

So they banned him from their stores until the year 3,000.

To Walk or To Not Walk the Tightrope—That is the Question

November 7, 2024

I don’t know why President Biden didn’t repeal tariffs the minute he took office. They serve no useful purpose, unless the money collected goes to build factories here that would produce the same goods at a high quality.

Maybe he thought it would look good to the people who kept screaming, against all the evidence, that the economy was in the sewer, and that tariffs would help. Optics are important.

Now we’ve seen that pussyfooting isn’t the answer. Be bold in your convictions. You may lose the election, but you’ll have accomplished something before you go down.

Of course, that doesn’t always work either. Far-left politicians were vocal, and go voted out of office.

So—Should you walk the political tightrope or storm around the ground in heavy boots?
