The Department of Justice wants states to hand over voter information so that it can conduct a federal review of the voting lists, for the purpose of removing ineligible voters. A noble ideal, but it involves handing over partial social security numbers, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers; and the government would be able hand over the information to a contractor. Can you think of a better way to facilitate identity theft?
Also—and equally importantly—does anybody think that the DOJ will stop with purging voter rolls? What about using the data to figure out who voted for whom? The possibilities for retaliation chill the blood.
Some states have rejected the overture outright; others, like Missouri, are considering it.
My fervent prayer is that elected officials remember that they are supposed to be protecting the country, its citizens, and its ideals, and not their own interests, when they respond to threats on our liberty.
