And the Holiday Madness Begins

November 21, 2012

Nope, not talking about shopping this time.

I wanted some salted, roasted peanuts for some cookies I was going to make, but the peanuts we got, although they didn’t say unsalted, like the unsalted ones do, had virtually no salt on them. Oh, well, I thought, they’ll make a nice, healthy snack.

And they probably would have, if I hadn’t decided to use up some leftover almond bark by coating the peanuts with it.

The Spirit of Cooperation

November 19, 2012

Dear Retailers:

If you agree to let your employees have the entire Thanksgiving holiday with their families, we the consumers will agree to flock to your stores at whatever hour you open on Black Friday—even as late as (gasp!) 8 a.m. to snag the deals we just can’t live without.

I know you say that you’re opening earlier and earlier because the consumers want it; but we know you’re doing it to get the jump on the other guy. It has nothing to do with what the consumers want.

So show a little compassion. We’ll still buy your wares—we promise.

They Just Happened to Have Some Handy...

November 10, 2012

I try to keep this blog light, but some things just SCREAM to be addressed:

Parents in Kashmir poured acid on their 15-year-old daughter because she looked at boys. Then let her suffer overnight before they took her to the doctor. (She was just a girl; disposable; less important than the family honor; so her death would mean nothing. And somehow they watched her suffer, while they apparently felt nothing.)

I checked to see if the father was in a profession where sulfuric acid was necessary for the job. He was a housepainter.

While the dad beat the girl, the mother got the acid to pour over her.

Do people in other parts of the world commonly keep sulfuric acid handy around the house? (And maybe they do. I don't know what it might be used for, but maybe they have stubborn drain clogs.)

Or did these parents have it just for this contingency?

Was this premeditated murder?

My Shot at the 1%

November 7, 2012

A co-worker reported, with an Eeyore sort of relish, “The stock market is crashing. The Dow dropped 300 points because Obama got re-elected.”

I replied that, in that case, I hoped my fund managers were buying the good stocks cheap.

Oh, the Irony

November 5, 2012

Yesterday I was having so much fun looking at the Christmas sale flyers that I was reluctant to tear myself away and get ready for church.

(There’s a good Advent sermon in there somewhere.)
