The other day I wondered how many of the people who were afraid they’d go out of business every time an environmental law came along actually did so.
Nine days later I read an article about how efforts to eradicate the boll weevil are paying off. Initially farmers complained about the cost. Now one is quoted as saying, “It was the best money we ever spent. It put cotton back on the map.”
I hope that other business owners had similar success stories.

What’s wrong with this scenario?
The Missouri legislature, in a spiteful, knee-jerk reaction against COVID protocols in hospitals, passed a law that bars hospitals from prohibiting visitors during emergencies.
Besides the obvious issue of making it impossible to keep infection from spreading, there’s a cost: The visitor have to be given gowns, gloves, and masks. Who’s picking up the tab? The hospitals, of course—possibly to the tune of $20.9 million just for the rollout (in a worst-case, all-beds-full scenario—which is what the COVID epidemic was). And by hospitals, of course, I mean “patients who use them.”
The Missouri Hospital Association spokesman said it could be less if hospitals weren’t required to provide personal protective materials. He added that the federal government could provide funding to offset the costs.
So: Missouri passes a spiteful law, and people from all around the country are expected to pay taxes to help fund it?
That oughta play well in other states.
Finally, Red and Blue can agree on something: Pay for your own stupid laws, Missouri!
