Carrrying Gender Bias A Bit Too Far

June 3, 2014

You know how you sometimes say, “That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard!”, but you don't really mean it?

Well, I may have a contender.

A University of Illinois study shows that people actually fear hurricanes with female names less, and are slightly less likely to evacuate for a female-named hurricane than one with a male name.

Are you kidding me???  It’s a STORM! A potentially life-threatening STORM! But because it has a female name you don’t think it will hurt you???

I’ve heard of gender bias before, but this is ridiculous!

If they named a hurricane Tiny Tim would people take it less seriously than one named Athena?
