Darwin Award Contenders

October 10, 2017

I’m looking at a picture of three signs from Lone Elk Park. The signs are on a pole, one above another, and read as follows:

   CAUTION
DO NOT APPROACH
OR FEED ANIMALS

MAINTAIN
100 FEET
DISTANCE

ELK MATING
 SEASON
USE EXTRA
 CAUTION

Why is this picture in the paper?

Because despite all the warnings,

People are being injured
while taking selfies with the elk.

This reminds me of a story I heard on WLS radio some years ago. A dead whale ended up on a beach in Australia. While working on getting it removed, authorities had to post signs telling people to stay off the dead whale. They were being attacked by sharks that were trying to feast on the carcass. Without missing a beat, co-anchor Catherine Johns retorted: "Isn't that thwarting Darwinism?"
