If you suspect that that fruitcake
your neighbor gave you has been around for a while, take comfort in knowing
that there’s an older one kicking around.
A fruitcake baked by Fidelia Ford
in 1878 is still in her family. She died before the cake could be eaten at
Christmas; her family considered it her legacy, and has taken care of it ever
since.
According to one of her descendants,
who took a bite of it in 2003, it tastes like “thrashed wheat”. But at this stage
of the game, that’s sort of beside the point.
That’s quite an heirloom.
