We Can't Ask THAT Question Any More

March 6, 2025

I remember reading an article several years ago that was written by someone from a country living under a dictatorship. I forget which one. The writer said (and I’m paraphrasing, it’s been a long time), “People ask why we don’t fight the government (or the Taliban) and get our country back.” The writer explained that fear, lack of food and medicine, and harsh retaliation were all reasons that people didn’t fight back. They were worn out and starving; they simply couldn’t.

Now, here we are, watching our president rock the world with threats of tariffs and cozying up to the man who has invaded one country and looks like he’d be fine with taking over others; and we say, “Why isn’t Congress doing anything?”

So, we well-fed, untortured, not-starving people aren’t exactly fighting back, either. Some are, of course—but most of us can’t even be bothered to contact our representatives and tell them exactly what we think of what the government is or isn’t doing, and strongly urge them to get the lead out and start defending the country.

Your mother was right: Point one finger, and more are pointing back at you.
