Use the Extra Time Wisely

November 5, 2023

The idea of a 32-hour work week, with pay for 40 hours, is being floated. Theoretically, it increases job satisfaction, productivity, and a greater work-life balance. That all sounds great, except that the initial article I read said that the extra day would provide people with much-needed “me time”—time for relaxation and self-care—perhaps a spa day or something.

I believe the first 3; I’ve said before in this blog that making people stick around the office when they have too little to do is counterproductive.

But I have a sneaking suspicion that the “self-care” time would be spent hauling kids around to still more activities or doing other things that increase your hustle and your frazzle, instead of actually getting that spa day, or that time to catch up on reading, or cooking, or whatever floats your relaxation boat.

So, before you grab that 32-hour lifeline, commit to using it to reduce the hustle, not increase it.
