Fake News

October 12, 2022

Like lots of other people, I’ve frequently wondered why one man’s obsession with power can plunge the entire world into war. Why does nobody ever say, “No, we’re not going to do that?” (Kudos to the Russian army members and the Russian citizens who are saying just that, by the way.)

These days, the solution could be fairly easy. The power-grabbers just want to hear that they’re doing well, that they’ve inspired fear and respect, and that they’re winning big-time. So, put them in a room with made-up news feeds talking about how well things are going for them, and let them watch all day long. Tell them what they want to hear, while the rest of the world goes on about its business. (There seems to be a tendency for people maniacal enough to start wars to deteriorate into paranoia and reclusiveness, so it’s not as far-fetched as it sounds.)

Would it be complicated? Sure, but way less complicated and expensive than waging war.
