Tax Appeal

October 6, 2022

So, here’s the thing: The governor wants to cut taxes; not food taxes or personal property tax (which means paying taxes again and again on the same old stuff), but income taxes, which the state uses to pay for—well, you know, running the state.

But county officials are gleefully anticipating increases in personal property taxes because the value of used cars is going way up, thanks to inventory shortages; and they intend to tax old cars based on a ridiculously inflated value.

The only good news I can find in this scenario is that the personal property tax on a Lexus is way more than the tax on a Honda; so, either one of two things may happen:

The people benefiting the most from the reduced income tax may have to shell out for personal property tax, which would make us middle-income folks feel like there IS justice somewhere;

Or, the people having to fork over the dollars in taxes on their high-end cars will protest and get the silliness of taxing an old car at a ridiculous rate stopped ASAP.
