A St. Louis mayoral candidate points to the fact that the city is losing population, and vows that she’ll take steps to reverse it.
I’m thinking, “Why not take advantage of the fewer numbers and spruce up what you’ve got? Rehab houses that can be saved, tear down the others. Make affordable housing with lots of green space. THEN advertise an inviting city and not a place full of decrepitude, and see if people come back.”
Of course, when people say they’re losing population, they mean “Losing the tax base.” So, maybe if they stopped making tax abatements to companies and sports teams, they could shore up some of that base, and have the money to carry out some of these projects.
