A Derby for the History Books

May 10, 2022

We saw the funniest Kentucky Derby finish ever on Saturday. A horse came up through the inside, and the announcer was so fixated on the three leaders that he didn’t even see it until it had won the race. We were hysterical. We had to watch the race three times to see how the horse did it, but it was hilarious that the announcer didn’t notice it.

(I later realized that he had probably been looking through binoculars, and they were trained on the three leaders, so he didn’t see the winner until he really was right there.)

For additional spice, the winner only got his place in the race the day before, when another horse dropped out. What a Derby!

The winner had started at odds of 80-1, with a payout of $163.60 on a $2 bet. While some people may wax philosophical about never giving up, and this story being an inspirational example of what the underdog can do, the real takeaway here is:

In addition to your preferred horse, bet on a longshot, just in case.
