Grab some Temple Dust

May 10, 2022

Depending on which version of Numbers 5:11-31 you read, you might think that the Lord was handing out an abortion formula.

The passage is really to protect women from false accusations of infidelity, so that their husbands couldn’t just divorce them whenever they felt like it.

The husband and wife had to go to the Temple, where the woman would be given a drink made of water and some dust from the floor of the Temple. According to the King James version, if her stomach swelled up and her thigh rotted, she was guilty. The New International Version uses the phrasing that her abdomen would swell, and her womb would miscarry. I don’t know about the validity of that translation. But,

Whether it was intended as an abortifacient or not, the result would certainly have been dire for any fetus, at least that of a guilty woman.

Who wants to break it to the Supreme Court?
