Unintended Consequences II

January 2, 2023

New laws, new challenges to them. Instead of “The Law of Unintended Consequences” we present: “The Unintended Consequences of Laws”.

Some abortion-rights groups are in court trying to overturn the abortion ban on the grounds that it violates the principle of religious freedom. It’s based on Christian ethics, they say, and doesn’t take into account the views of other religions.

Second in our category of “That’s Ironic!”: Food manufacturers are required to avoid cross-contamination with sesame, as it is now recognized as an allergen. Rather than go to all that trouble, some companies said, “The heck with it,” and actually started adding sesame to their food, so that they can just put it on the label and be done with it.

Aaanddd finally: In response to censorship laws regarding exposing children to sexuality in writing, some school districts have pulled the Bible from the shelves. That actually makes sense, if you’re using sex as a guide for censorship—I vividly remember getting queasy (as an adult) reading the section in Judges about why the other tribes went to war with Benjamin—but I had a hard time believing that the Children’s Illustrated Bible had much going on. It was restored to the shelves after review.
