A few years ago I met two people when
we were volunteering for something. The talk turned to, “What do you do for a living?”
One was an EMT. The other one said, “I’m just a limo driver.”
The other day I met a guy wearing
a jacket indicating he was in med school. I asked if he was specializing in
something and he said, “I’m just a programmer,” as though he were embarrassed.
My response to both men was the
same: “You’re not ‘just’ anything. Are you good at what you do? Do you enjoy
it? Are you making a living? Then don’t apologize for it.”
(I kind of see where they’re coming
from. When I tell people I’m a bookkeeper they say—almost invariably—“Oh.” So I
get the feeling. But still…)
Just remember: Whatever you’re
doing, you’re not “just” anything. You’re a person who’s good at what you do. Own it.
